At the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly General Debate of the 79th Session of the Assembly


The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Her Excellency Mrs. Francess Piagie Alghali, delivered Sierra Leone’s statement at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly General Debate on the agenda item relating to Crime Prevention, Countering the use of Information Technologies for Crime Purposes, and Drug Control.

In her intervention, Deputy Minister Alghali affirmed Sierra Leone alignment of its position with the statement of Chad as Chair of the African Group, emphasizing the principles enshrined in the to- be-soon tabled African Group resolution: United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders’ strategic plan. Minister Alghali, assured the Committee of Sierra Leone’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and sustainable development, adding that her delegation is pleased to contribute to the discourse on this critical agenda item, which carries significant implications for national, regional and international peace, securit
y and development.

“We acknowledge the complexities surrounding crime prevention, drug control, and the challenges posed by transnational organized crime, particularly in our West Africa and Sahel region. In line with Security Council resolution 2535 (2020), which calls for enhanced youth participation in peace processes, Sierra Leone is committed to implementing policies that promote the active involvement of youth in governance and security for crime prevention and drug control,” she said.

The Deputy Minister further emphasized the importance of establishing the F?lei Tech City, unveiled by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio during the recent Sierra Leone Innovates Tech Summit, as testament to government’s drive to harness innovation and technology for youth empowerment and crime prevention.

“This technology hub, to be developed in collaboration with the African Development Bank, will serve as a center for innovation, reflecting the country’s aspirations to actively use, create, and foster technol
ogy solutions rather than being mere recipients of technology,”she noted.
