The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs kicked off a two-day celebration today at the Murray Town Municipal School in anticipation of the International Day of the Girl Child, which will be observed tomorrow. Organized in collaboration with the Children’s Forum Network, the event gathered children from across Freetown to highlight the importance of child welfare and rights, focusing on empowering girls.
Key officials in attendance included Deputy Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Hindowa Bindi, Director of Children’s Protection Mrs. Joyce Kamara, and Senior Protection Officer Bashiru Sesay.
Mrs. Kamara opened the event with a speech emphasizing the unwavering commitment of the ministry to ensuring the welfare of children, especially girls, through initiatives like the Children’s Forum Network. She encouraged the children to remain active participants in the forum and applauded the ministry for maintaining this annual celebration, which underscores its mandate to protect and support the nation’
s youth.
“This event is a reminder of our responsibility to protect and empower the next generation, especially girls,” Kamara said. “It’s not just about celebration-it’s about making sure every child has a voice and a safe space to grow.”
Deputy Minister Bindi addressed the children before the festivities and praised Minister Dr. Isata Mahoi for her dedication to child protection. He urged the young participants to practice love, respect, and unity as they represent the future of Sierra Leone.
“The future of this nation rests in your hands,” Bindi told the children. As you grow, remember to support one another. As a ministry, we will continue working hard to ensure your safety and well-being.”
The two-day event, culminating tomorrow on the official International Day of the Girl Child, is part of the ministry’s ongoing strategy to align its efforts with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on child protection and gender equality.
Children enjoyed cultural performances,
interactive sessions, and fun activities to inspire them to advocate for their rights and futures, particularly girls’ empowerment. Tomorrow’s event is expected to continue this celebration of children, focusing on empowering girls to take charge of their futures.
