Ejura-Sekyedumase: IPDC charged to promote peaceful environment for election 2024

Members of the newly inaugurated Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) for Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipality, have been charged to promote a peaceful environment in the municipality ahead of the 2024 election.

They should set the tone for peaceful discussions among stakeholders by bringing them around the table for amicable resolution of issues that could potentially spark violence.

Mr. Dujing Jacob Japiong, the Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who made the admonition, said maintaining peace ahead of the election was a collective responsibility of every citizen.

He was speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate the IPDC as part of mechanisms being implemented by the NCCE to ensure a violent-free election in December.

The IPDC, among other objectives, seeks to proactively resolve emerging issues within the political terrain before they degenerate into violence.

The NCCE Director said Ghana remained one of the few countries in the Sub-Region to successfully transfer power f
rom one democratically elected government to another for over three decades.

He said elections in some African countries were often characterised by violence and wanton destruction of lives and property, citing what happened in Cote D’Ivoire, Kenya and Burkina Faso.

The IPDC, he said, formed part of efforts by the Commission to encourage Ghanaians to uphold the 1992 Constitution through the promotion of peace across the country.

The expectation is that the committee would help minimise petty squabbles and misunderstandings between political parties in election years.

Mr. Dujing said IPDC was a unifying body which would not only promote peace, unity, and tolerance but also ensure credible and transparent elections.

The committee is made up of representatives from political parties, security agencies, persons with disabilities, women and youth groups, NCCE, and the Electoral Commission (EC).
