Ministry of Foreign Affairs Engages Lebanese Community to Aid Sierra Leoneans Stranded in Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

In the wake of the escalating conflict in Lebanon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led by Minister Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, has taken swift action to address the concerns of Sierra Leonean citizens stranded in the war-torn country. A meeting held on 8 October, 2024, brought together the Lebanese community in Sierra Leone to discuss strategies for providing much-needed support to those affected.

The Ministry’s conference room was filled with a palpable sense of urgency as representatives from the Lebanese community shared their insights on the situation in Lebanon, particularly the plight of Sierra Leoneans trapped amid the violence. Minister Kabba expressed the nation’s deep concern for these citizens, noting the inseparable bond between Sierra Leone and Lebanon-rooted in decades of shared history and the significant contributions the Lebanese community has made to Sierra Leone’s social and economic development.

“The crisis in Lebanon affects us all, not just those directly
involved, but every Sierra Leonean, whether here or abroad,” Minister Kabba remarked. His words underscored the far-reaching impact of the conflict and the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens, wherever they may be.

Minister Kabba commended the Lebanese community for their proactive efforts in sheltering Sierra Leoneans stranded in Lebanon. He highlighted the vital role played by community members like Jawad, who has been instrumental in coordinating the safe repatriation of Sierra Leonean nationals.

For many at the meeting, these efforts reflect the deep solidarity between the two nations. Sierra Leoneans in Lebanon, some of whom are migrant workers, have faced immense challenges as the conflict escalates, with many now relying on the humanitarian assistance provided by both local and international groups.

Swaid Jihad, a representative of the Lebanese community, provided an update on the current situation. He explained that Sierra Leoneans are being housed in safe locations with the help o
f the International Organization for Migration (IOM). He shared how the IOM has been working alongside the Sierra Leonean consulate to issue Laisse-Passer, temporary travel documents, to those without passports, ensuring their safe passage home.

“It’s a challenging situation, but we’re doing all we can to help,” said Jihad, reflecting the commitment of the Lebanese community to aiding those affected.

One of the most touching moments came when Lebanese businessman Hisham Mackie spoke about his family’s dedication to supporting the cause. “We’re committed to providing whatever financial and humanitarian assistance we can to ensure no one is left behind,” he said, echoing the sentiments of many in attendance working tirelessly to help their fellow citizens.

The meeting concluded with a message of hope and determination. Alan C.E. Logan, Acting Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assured attendees that the Sierra Leone Embassy in Iran has dispatched additional Laisse-Passer to facilitate the s
afe return of Sierra Leoneans. He noted that the consulate is actively registering all citizens in Lebanon, ensuring that no one is overlooked in this critical time.

Minister Kabba’s words resonated deeply with those present: “The government has a responsibility to protect its citizens wherever they are, and we will do everything in our power to bring them home safely.” His message of compassion and solidarity was a powerful reminder that, even in times of crisis, Sierra Leone stands united in its commitment to the welfare of its people.

As the conflict in Lebanon continues, the support from the Lebanese community in Sierra Leone is a beacon of hope for many. Through collective efforts, the safety and dignity of Sierra Leoneans stranded abroad are being upheld, a testament to the enduring bonds between these two nations.
