In a bid to foster unity and promote development, Paramount Chief Thangbathi II of Romendy Chiefdom has summoned his maiden meeting with local stakeholders, aiming to reconcile long-standing differences that have hampered peace in the region.
The gathering, graced by community leaders and citizens, marks a significant step toward healing the deep divides that have persisted in the Chiefdom following a protracted leadership struggle.
Reflecting on the region’s history, Paramount Chief Thangbathi II recounted the rivalry between his father and the father of Mahmoud Fonti Kanu, both of whom contested the chieftaincy in 1958. “Even though my father was the most popular candidate and was believed to have won, he accepted the results because they were brothers,” he shared. The paramount chief emphasized that his goal is not to hold onto power but to honor his heritage as the great-grandson of a former Paramount Chief, dismissing rumors that he is an outsider in his land.
“I have every right to contest for the P
aramount Chieftaincy, just like the 13 other candidates in the 2020 election,” said Chief Thangbathi II, addressing the ongoing dispute. He acknowledged the right of those dissatisfied, like Mahmoud Fonti Kanu, to file petitions but urged the community to move beyond the power struggle. “This tussle for power has lasted for too long, and now is the time to turn a new page for the development of our beloved Chiefdom,” he implored.
Several speakers, including Chief Zachariah Kanu, who chaired the meeting, echoed the call for peace and unity. Representatives of the youth, commercial motorbike riders, the women’s wing, and religious groups all voiced their support for the reconciliation efforts. Mohamed Kamara, known locally as “Med Kay” and a relative of the former Chiefdom caretaker Pa Karimu Kabba, emphasized the importance of collective action. “Although Pa Karimu might have his grievances, there is an absolute need for all to respect the Paramount Chief and work together for the betterment of the Chiefdom,”
Kamara urged.
In a poignant moment, Pa Kaprr Kuma Bangura, the Head of Traditional Ceremonies, described Romendy as a chiefdom deeply rooted in customs and traditions. He praised the paramount chief’s introduction to the House of Ceremonies but highlighted Chief Thangbathi II’s challenges, including the campaign, election, and prolonged court battle. “We are considerate enough to allow him time to rest before proceeding with the next phases of the ceremonies,” Pa Kaprr noted. However, he raised concerns about unauthorized access to sacred areas, fearing that some traditional rites may have been violated, which could bring unforeseen consequences to the Chiefdom.
The meeting culminated in the appointment of Dr. Gibril Kanu, affectionately known as “Dr. G.K.,” as the Chairman of the Chiefdom Committee. Dr. Kanu made an impassioned plea to parents to prioritize education. “Send your children to school; education is the key to success,” he reminded the gathering.
